A veritable dichotomy

By Nate LaClaire —  March 31, 2006 — Leave a comment

In our neighborhood, there are several dogs that bark all evening. One gets started and the others follow. It seems that they must all be chained out all night, for it doesn’t seem to matter what time I go to bed, I generally hear them while in bed. It’s a creepy sound – all of those dogs barking at once from all over the neighborhood. However, tonight I do not hear a single dog as I sit in bed typing this. Now that has me freaked out. It has become such a common occurrence that the lack of dogs barking now seems creepy. Go figure.

A few months back my Dad and I discussed the fact that Pat Robertson seems to be shooting himself in the foot quite often lately. Well, apparently we are not the only ones who feel that way. Tom Ponchak has started a petition entitled Christians Against Pat Speaking (CAPS). I have great respect for Pat Robertson and consider myself honored to have walked within 6 feet of him as I left a restaurant after a wonderful lunch last April, but his recent inflamatory comments are not progressing the cause of Christ. As Christians, it is our duty to love others (remember the “greatest commandment”?), but Rev. Robertson’s recent behavior demonstrates everything but love.

Explore Mars

I can’t find any information regarding when they did it, but Google has released a service called Google Mars. This new service allows visitors to travel the surface of Mars using the familiar Google Maps interface. Talk about a neat tool!

Googled Out

I recently commented to a friend that I sometimes feel like I spend my entire life on Google. Until I saw my Google Trends today, though, I didn’t realize how right that statement was.

It appears that I have made over 2000 searches on Google since last May. That doesn’t include all of the searches I have made when I wasn’t logged in to Google. Yikes! I need a life…

Well, Christmas is two days away. I finished my school work on Monday, finished my shopping on Monday, finally got most of my Christmas cards in the mail Wednesday (if you haven’t received one yet and think you should, it’s probably in the mail or still sitting on my desk – I’m thinking about sending Martin Luther King Day cards 🙂 ). Life has calmed down somewhat. Gifts still aren’t wrapped, though…

Today I went to see The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe with my sisters and a friend. That is the best movie I have seen in a long time! Now I’m trying to figure out if I can fit it in my schedule to go back with some other friends next week. Awesome, terrific, fantastic movie! One of the most common questions I’ve heard is: does it keep true to the book? Answer: I don’t have a clue. Does it stay true to the Wonderworks movie? Not as I remember it. However, it’s been so long since I read the book that I can’t recall if it matched the movie or not. Now I want to read it again… Were I still working at the library I would grab the book first thing Monday morning. Since I don’t… I’ll have to make a special trip. 🙂

Actually, first I need to finish The Christmas Wish. I am thoroughly enjoying that book.

Life’s funny isn’t it? I’ll elaborate at another time. Hey, there has to be some reason for you to come back! 🙂

October 1

October 1 is here. The trees are turning, autumn weather is upon us. Beautiful autumn weather. Today is Community Day here in Poland, Maine. This year’s event is being run by the Poland Recreation Department and is being held at the Poland Regional High School. I will be going to the event at around 11:00 this morning to help the Friends of the Library with their cake walk.

Last night I was invited to go along with the library staff for the end-of-summer staff party. We went to Julian’s in Gray. The party was also a going-away party for Joanne Wildes, a dear friend, fellow believer, part-time library employee, and just plain great lady who is moving to Rhode Island with her husband in another month. Dick, her husband, attended the party as well and we all had a very nice time.

Life has been busy since my last post. My college classes are in full swing and choir has now begun. So, when my business is figured in to the whole thing, free time is not something I experience very often. However, my grades are doing well, as is my business – so it is worth the stress.

A friend of the family, Philip Stange, is staying with my family this weekend. The weekend promises to be a lot of fun! Unfortunately, I have some (typical for me) last-minute school work to do, but I am sure I will have time to recreate as well. According to Philip my web site is easily findable by someone who is not looking for it. 🙂 He told me that his mom found it and sent him the address. Hello world!

I am committed to not making promises I can’t keep. However, I do seriously hope to post something else before another month+ has passed.

My Birthday

By Nate LaClaire —  August 20, 2005 — Leave a comment

This is my first post after turning 24. I had an awesome day today! I worked in the morning and then when Mom got home from work I just hung out in the kitchen talking with the various family members as they came and went, while searching through dozens of movie reviews to find something to watch tonight. Mom started the pizza. Finally, having no idea what I wanted to watch, Dad and I went to the video store to see what we could find. After choosing Finding Neverland and deciding to get The Haunted Mansion to watch in case we didn’t end up liking the former, we were just about to leave when I spotted Are We There Yet? I put back Neverland and we brought Are We There Yet? home. I don’t know that I made the best decision, but after the first half of the movie was over we actually started enjoying it. 🙂

We ate the truly awesome pizza while watching the movie (after Alissa got home from work). We took a break from the movie at around 9:00 to open gifts, do evening chores, and give the cats their cat tower (see my next post). Then we finished the movie.

The gifts are great! Alissa and Eliza gave me a Music Clip for holding my music books open, a gift card to The Bible Bookstore, and gift certificates to Subway – all of which I will thoroughly enjoy! Mom and Dad gave me a Selah CD and ten violin lessons at Carroll’s Music Center in Lewiston – two additional gifts that I will thoroughly enjoy. I’ve been meaning to take lessons since they gave me the violin for my last birthday, so now I don’t have any excuse. 🙂

Between the two days, I have had an awesome birthday!

Night before birthday

Well, I am writing this post the evening before my 24th birthday. It is hard to imagine… My life has changed so much over the past couple of years that I still haven’t caught my breath. Tomorrow I will be 24. Wow.

I had an awesome day today. I worked in the morning and then the whole family went to Taber’s and played miniature golf in the afternoon. We had a blast! It has been so long since we have done anything like that. We need to do it more often. When we got back we had Grammie and Grampa LaClaire over for Chinese (from the absolute best Chinese restaurant around, Cathay Hut on Lisbon St. in Lewiston) to celebrate Grammie’s 75th birthday and my birthday. We had turnovers and ice cream for dessert. While we were waiting for dessert to sound palatable we played a round of Pitch. That’s something else that we haven’t done in WAY too long. We had a very nice and relaxing evening.

“Nice and relaxing” is unquestionably the way to describe the entire day. It was great!
