Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club is a bright, cozy whodunnit set in a retirement community where four friends meet weekly to discuss cold cases. When a real murder lands on their doorstep, their hobby turns into a full-on investigation, and their blend of curiosity, empathy, and quiet competence makes for a surprisingly warm mystery.
I came to this series through the Netflix movie adaptation with Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie, which I loved for its classic Murder, She Wrote and Agatha Christie vibes (longtime readers might recall that I previously shared that I am a Murder, She Wrote fan). The novel delivers that same spirit: a neatly layered puzzle, a charming ensemble, and a sense that the smallest observations can crack the biggest questions.
Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim are a terrific quartet. Their friendship feels lived-in, and their different strengths keep the sleuthing lively without ever feeling gimmicky. Joyce’s diary-like narration adds a steady heartbeat to the story, grounding the twists in everyday kindness and the rhythms of community life.
What I appreciated most was the balance of levity and tenderness. The book is funny, but it is also honest about aging, loss, and the way people carry their histories. The mystery keeps moving, yet the quieter moments are what give the story its warmth.
If I have a quibble, it is that the supporting cast can get crowded, and I occasionally had to pause to keep track of all the names and connections. But the payoff is satisfying, and the final reveal lands in a way that feels both clever and fair.
If you enjoy classic whodunnits with a cozy setting, sharp banter, and a group of sleuths you want to keep spending time with, this is an easy recommendation. I am looking forward to spending more time with this club – as of the day I publish this there are 4 more books in the series.
