Archives For birthday

Thanksgiving

I was thinking last Sunday about how my life has changed over the past year and that has led me to several days of consideration about this topic. Some know that on my 26th birthday I was frustrated about where I was in life and set a list of goals to achieve before my next birthday. As August 2008 approached, I became more and more depressed and frustrated by the fact that I still hadn’t achieved most of my goals. Well, my 27th birthday has come and gone and I still haven’t achieved most of the goals on that list. Know what? I still care, because all of the goals will have a lasting and positive impact on my life, but I am no longer mad. I realized on Sunday that while I was focusing on certain areas of my life, something else was happening. My list of goals included reconnecting with one old friend. Aside from that, the goals had nothing to do with friendships, or relationships of any kind. What I realized on Sunday was that God had other plans: to give me the quality relationships that I so much needed. Over the past year, I have formed closer friendships with people that I have known for several years but hadn’t been close to, restored close friendships with people I had drifted away from, reconnected with people I had lost touch with, and formed new friendships. A few days after my birthday last year, someone commented to me about telling my friends something. Although I kept this to myself, I realized at that moment that although I had “friends,” I hadn’t been giving myself time for friendships. I knew people that I would consider friends, but I couldn’t be sure they felt the same way about me. Then there were the people that I knew I could count on as friends to help me out in a pinch, but could they say the same about me?

No man is an island and I am living proof. Through Facebook and LinkedIn, I have reconnected with those I have missed communicating with. Through church and college, I have built new friendships and rekindled old ones. Meanwhile, I have learned who my real friends were that I was just too blind to recognize. I discovered the true meaning of friendship and learned what a real relationship looks like.

I thank God for what He has done in my life this past year. I pray that I will never again get so caught up in my own list of goals that I miss the work He is doing in my life.

Pilgrim’s Progress was written by John Bunyan on this day in 1678. Animotion Studios has released a very well-made audio drama of the book. Whether you have read the book or not, the audio drama adds life to this beautiful story.

Photos of Cats

Our cats got a cat tower today. They are having a blast with it! Take a look at the photos below:

Riley was the first to check it out, followed closely by Pippin. Merry was a little unsure of this new thing.

So, Alissa put Merry on the top, where he stayed for quite a while. Riley and Pippin explored and played while Merry was happy just laying on top surveying his world.

My Birthday

This is my first post after turning 24. I had an awesome day today! I worked in the morning and then when Mom got home from work I just hung out in the kitchen talking with the various family members as they came and went, while searching through dozens of movie reviews to find something to watch tonight. Mom started the pizza. Finally, having no idea what I wanted to watch, Dad and I went to the video store to see what we could find. After choosing Finding Neverland and deciding to get The Haunted Mansion to watch in case we didn’t end up liking the former, we were just about to leave when I spotted Are We There Yet? I put back Neverland and we brought Are We There Yet? home. I don’t know that I made the best decision, but after the first half of the movie was over we actually started enjoying it. :-)

We ate the truly awesome pizza while watching the movie (after Alissa got home from work). We took a break from the movie at around 9:00 to open gifts, do evening chores, and give the cats their cat tower (see my next post). Then we finished the movie.

The gifts are great! Alissa and Eliza gave me a Music Clip for holding my music books open, a gift card to The Bible Bookstore, and gift certificates to Subway – all of which I will thoroughly enjoy! Mom and Dad gave me a Selah CD and ten violin lessons at Carroll’s Music Center in Lewiston – two additional gifts that I will thoroughly enjoy. I’ve been meaning to take lessons since they gave me the violin for my last birthday, so now I don’t have any excuse. :-)

Between the two days, I have had an awesome birthday!

Night before birthday

By Nate LaClaire —  August 19, 2005 — Leave a comment

Well, I am writing this post the evening before my 24th birthday. It is hard to imagine… My life has changed so much over the past couple of years that I still haven’t caught my breath. Tomorrow I will be 24. Wow.

I had an awesome day today. I worked in the morning and then the whole family went to Taber’s and played miniature golf in the afternoon. We had a blast! It has been so long since we have done anything like that. We need to do it more often. When we got back we had Grammie and Grampa LaClaire over for Chinese (from the absolute best Chinese restaurant around, Cathay Hut on Lisbon St. in Lewiston) to celebrate Grammie’s 75th birthday and my birthday. We had turnovers and ice cream for dessert. While we were waiting for dessert to sound palatable we played a round of Pitch. That’s something else that we haven’t done in WAY too long. We had a very nice and relaxing evening.

“Nice and relaxing” is unquestionably the way to describe the entire day. It was great!
